AVONMORE — A showcase of talent and fun, the Avonmore Fair kicks off tonight, Fri., July 15, with new featured midway operator Carter Shows Ltd.

The sights, sounds and colourful activities of the 2016 Fair naturally include traditional displays of homecraft and agricultural excellence. The farming sector will be further highlighted in the Super Structure building (behind North Stormont Place) with an interactive “Farm to Table” display featuring ‘Mooonica’ the milking cow. Youngsters should enjoy the return of pedal tractors as well.
The Stormont 4-H Club will again play a significant role at the Fair, rallying with both dairy (Sat., 10 a.m.) and beef (Sun., 12:30 p.m.) cattle shows. The 4-Hers have also organized Farmers’ Olympics, a spectacle set for Sunday at 2 p.m.
For those interested in equine pursuits, a Western horse shows run both Sat. and Sun. (10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., respectively).Clad in red and white, the Canadian Cowgirls will ride into the ring for riveting patriotic shows on both days (Sat., 7 p.m. and Sun., 3 p.m.)
Plenty of talent will be on display, starting with the extremely young: The ever-popular baby show is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Sat. (registration at 10). At 1:30 p.m., the stage makes way for the Fair’s prince and princess competition for contestants 5 and under, followed by a youth talent show for hopefuls up to age 10.
