CHESTERVILLE — Heather Hutt was surprised last weekend with the results of a beaver's handiwork on a variegated willow tree in the back yard of her Water Street home. Residing at the property along the South Nation River, near the Chesterville Dam, for more than a quarter century, Hutt says she's never noticed evidence of such activity at her place until Saturday morning, Aug. 6. Sometime overnight, the bold rodent felled the ornamental tree behind her garage, leaving it on the ground for Hutt to discover. But by Sunday morning, the site was clean as the industrious critter had returned to retrieve its bounty. Perhaps a natural competitor to the Chesterville Dam is currently under construction, somewhere in the same vicinity. Zandbergen photo, Nation Valley News
