Xplornet investing $40-million in Cornwall; hiring more than 130 over next five years

CORNWALL — More than 130 new full-time tech-sector jobs will be created over the next five years in Cornwall and surrounding area, as a result of a planned $40-million investment announced today by Xplornet Communications Inc.

To support its continued growth across Canada, Xplornet says that renovations will begin shortly on a new multi-function regional office in Cornwall.  The city was selected as the preferred location because of its strong local economy and the quality of its workforce, according to the Woodstock, New Brunswick-based company.

Xplornet will invest in its new Cornwall operations over the next half decade, establishing offices in the revitalized Weave Shed Complex in Cornwall’s Cotton Mills district.

In recent years, Xplornet has achieved significant growth to become Canada’s largest rural-focused Internet service provider. The company plans a major expansion of its network next year — with the continued extension of its LTE Internet service combined with the launch of two new satellites offering Internet download speeds not previously seen in many parts of rural Canada.  Supporting the anticipated needs of customers in Eastern Ontario and throughout Canada, the new Cornwall office will be the first of its kind for Xplornet — implementing proprietary technology allowing customer care approaches not seen in the telecommunications sector before.

Xplornet says the added jobs will be “highly skilled” with “attractive compensation packages.”

Once fully operational, the office will support all core company functions, including technical service, customer care, sales, network, and corporate support.

“Our customers live in rural communities across Canada.  To continue our heritage of providing exceptional customer service, we choose to invest in rural communities.  We think Cornwall and the surrounding areas in Eastern Ontario are representative of our customers and ultimately, of rural Canada itself.  This expansion promises exciting opportunities for our company, and we envision an equally bright future for our operations in Cornwall,” says Allison Lenehan, Xplornet CEO.

“The presence of an innovative company like Xplornet in Eastern Ontario is exactly the type of investment our region needs.  It has been a pleasure working with the Xplornet Team to bring this project to the riding of Stormont Dundas and South Glengarry, and I hope to continue to work with companies like Xplornet to grow our community and position Cornwall as an exciting, innovative place to invest and create jobs,” said MP Guy Lauzon.

Xplornet has been nationally recognized in four of the last five years as a Top Employer in Atlantic Canada, has been named a Canadian Telecom Employer of Choice for three years in a row, with a proven reputation for developing and promoting internal talent.
