WINCHESTER — The annual North Dundas Parade of Lights is set to roll through town in just over five weeks, and this year, the committee wants spectators to do more than just watch — they want you to vote for your favourite float.
A poll will be set up on the parade’s Facebook page, where parade-goers are asked to vote in the first-ever People’s Choice Award in the float contest. This is the latest category in the float contest, joining Best Overall, Most Lights, Best Decorated Farm Equipment, Best Business Float, and Best Non-Profit Organization Float. Prizes are sponsored by local businesses.
Sweet Corner Park will live up to its name on parade night; Beavertails have confirmed their spot again this year. Joining them will be the Jiu Jitsu Special Events Committee from Therien Jiu Jitsu and Kickboxing in Chesterville. They will be selling hot dogs, hot chocolate, coffee, apple cider, popcorn, caramel corn, and ninja bread cookies to raise money to help kids from the dojo attend the World Kobudo Federation martial arts training event in Athens, Greece in May, 2018. This past spring, the committee had raised enough funds to pay the entrance fees for the entire weekend for three kids at Budofest, Quebec City, and six kids’ entrance fees at World Kobudo Federation 2016 in Rochester, New York.
Hugh Fawcett has always been a staple at the main corner, announcing the floats as they roll past, but this year, he’ll be away. The committee requests anyone willing to fill his place to please contact a committee member. Before he heads out to the parade, Santa will be at the Vendor and Trade Show at the arena, meeting with kids and posing for pictures. Vendors will have a variety of Christmas gift items on display, so it’s a great chance to get some Christmas shopping done. Don’t forget to check out the businesses downtown as well while you’re in town.
As always, volunteers are welcome, especially on parade day. Anyone willing to lend a hand is encouraged to contact the committee.
