SOUTH STORMONT — One man is dead this evening and another in hospital with life-threatening injuries after a vehicle plowed into them while they were pushing another vehicle out of the ditch.
The event occurred just after 5:30 p.m. this evening (Nov. 21), say the SD&G OPP. Officers responded to a report of a single motor vehicle collision on County Road 18, South Stormont Township, approximately two kilometres west of the County Road 14 intersection at Osnabruck Centre.
A passenger vehicle was eastbound on County Road 18 when, for reasons under investigation, the driver lost control causing the vehicle to enter the south ditch, striking two adult male pedestrians who were assisting with a vehicle that previously went in the ditch. Both were transported to the hospital where one was pronounced deceased while the other is suffering from life-threatening injuries. Names are being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.
OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI) are assisting with the investigation. A section of County Road 18 between Rombough Road and Morgan Road remains closed to traffic with detours in place.
The area received its significant snowfall of the season yesterday evening and today, leading to slick driving conditions.
Further details on the accident are to be released Nov. 22, according to police.
This article was updated to reflect an SD&G OPP correction regarding the direction of the passenger vehicle.
