CHESTERVILLE — McCloskey’s bartender Alexis Earl stands beside the beer taps at the 22 Victoria Street establishment  (photo above). Beside her is the prominent blue “McCloskey” handle from which she and her colleagues pour the local hotel’s own in-house beer made by Waterloo Brewery.

Visitors have the chance to taste that new McCloskey Lager — it was only introduced within the last few weeks — and several other Ontario brews at a beer-tasting event tonight at the Chesterville bar also known as the McCloskey Hotel.

A representative from the Waterloo firm will be on site to discuss the finer points of making beer and the attributes of the new McCloskey blend, starting at 7:30 p.m. tonight (Thursday, Dec. 15). A complimentary tasting is offered.

Manager Dan Riitano has added several craft beers to the mix at the local hotel in recent months, with Steam Whistle Pilsner and Muskoka Brewery offerings like craft lager, cream ale and “Mad Tom IPA” on tap at the bar (entrance at the back). There are spigots for Waterloo Brewing Co.‘s dark and IPA varieties, too, along with Beau’s All Natural Brewing Co.‘s Lug Tread Lagered Ale.

Beyond the expanded liquid roster, Riitano has been bolstering the rotation of live acts at the venue, including two-time Juno nominated jazz and reggae musician Jason Wilson last month. Otherwise slated to play Ottawa’s RBC Royal Bank Bluesfest next summer, Joe Gaspar Band cranked out classic rock and blues tunes last Saturday night (Dec. 10).

This Saturday night (Dec. 17), the McCloskey stage features the band Tycoons combined with warm but nerdy fashion; doors open 7 p.m. for the Tycoons Tacky Xmas Sweater Party.

Below is a video snippet from the Dec. 10 show at McCloskey’s with The Joe Gaspar Band.
