MOOSE CREEK — The weather is wintery, the ice is solid, and this village’s annual winter carnival heads into its grand finale finish with its popular annual four-on-four pond-hockey tourney this afternoon.
Organizers completely re-flooded the ice last Thursday night to make the surface as good as possible at Moose Creek’s elaborate natural-ice arena — a facility topped by a roof, smoothed by an honest-to-goodness ice resurfacer and attached to a licensed rink shack to boot.
“It’s one of our biggest fundraisers of the year,” says Moose Creek Recreation’s Ryan Villeneuve, yesterday at the event.
Seven teams are taking part in the round-robin tournament sponsored by Rolland Plumbing and Heating.
This year’s Carnival features a number of different events for both young and old. Snow-sculptures, snow soccer and snowshoe nature-trail walks have been going on at Moose Creek park all weekend. The Carnival also enjoyed a Yuk Yuk’s comedy show Friday night and a snowmobile rally on Saturday (yesterday). Local artist Lorena Sollows also hosted 18 people for a “Paint & Sip” event inside the village’s community centre yesterday.
There’s still time to check out the tourney today (Sunday, Feb. 5) as well as fun-for-kids nerf-gun wars starting at 2 p.m. A euchre tournament is slated to begin at 1 p.m. See the full schedule here.
