Half-load restriction began March 1

SDG – Half-load season for the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SDG) and local municipalities got under way March 1.

Usually running from the beginning of March until May, vehicles are restricted to carrying a maximum of five tonnes per axle on the weaker roads located throughout the region during the half-load season. Roads subject to seasonal weight restrictions are identified with a sign and are enforced.

The half-load rule protects roads when they are extra vulnerable to damage as the ground thaws out from winter.

But the start of half-load season is occasionally delayed if the frost is particularly deep after a hard winter. In 2014, the restriction didn’t apply until March 24 and lasted longer into May than usual.

Milk trucks and garbage trucks are exempt from the half-load rule.
