CHESTERVILLE — Development of the 2018 North Dundas Fire Prevention Calendar is already underway with the help of local students.
South Mountain fire station firefighter Lee Bowers, a member of the township fire prevention committee, turned up at St. Mary’s Catholic School this week to hand out prizes to students participating in the calendar art contest. Prizes were awarded by random draw, so the winners’ works won’t necessarily appear in the final calendar production.
Bowers said that students from Chesterville Public, Winchester Public and Nationview Public School also took part as usual. He was due at Nationview on Friday this week for a similar prize handover.
Students in Grade 7/8 at North Dundas District Intermediate School similarly put their creativity to work for fire prevention — but with a separate poster contest in which an Apple electronic device is top prize.
The efforts raises awareness of fire prevention among the township’s youth, as well as the general public who make use of the distributed calendar.
Bowers said the North Dundas Fire Department earmarks $3,500 annually for student prizes.
