Community Food Share seeking volunteers to ‘fill-a-bag’

Fill-a-Bag Food Drive

DUNDAS & STORMONT — From May 23 to June 9, food banks across Canada are coming together to participate in the Every Plate Full Campaign. The goal is to fill the empty plates of Canadians in need.

As part of this campaign, Community Food Share is once again organizing Fill-a-Bag — a community-wide food drive in Dundas County and North Stormont Township.

‘We’re asking everyone in our community to help us stock our shelves so that none of our neighbours go hungry this summer,’ said Community Food Share Administrator Ian McKelvie.

‘Last year our first Fill-a-Bag Food Drive collected over 13,000 lbs of food from area residents. This year we believe we can do even better but we will need more volunteers to meet our goal.’

On Saturday May 27, between 1 and 3 p.m., teams of two to three people drop off an empty grocery bag on the front porch or in the mailbox of each residence on their assigned route.

The following Saturday, June 3 the volunteers return to those same homes, between 1 and 3 pm, to pick up the donations of non-perishable food items. All donations are then delivered to several collection points.

‘It should only take one to two hours on each day so we aren’t asking volunteers to make a huge time commitment’, said McKelvie.
