SNC seeks to ‘reel’ in youth campers to fish, in 9th annual free two-day camp

Drop a line at SNC’s 9th Annual Youth Fish Camp

WINCHESTER — Due to popular demand, South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) 9th annual Youth Fish Camp will take place at two venues this year: Cass Bridge Conservation Area in Winchester and High Falls Conservation Area in Casselman.

“Our free two-day camp teaches youth the rules of fishing, where to drop a line, selecting equipment, baiting – including fly-tying, and casting. Both campsites offer accessible docks, so youth of all abilities are welcome to join,” said SNC Communications Assistant Holly Nyenkamp.

The camps are for youth between the ages of 10 to15 and will take place on July 5 and 6 at Cass Bridge Conservation Area and July 19 and 20 at High Falls Conservation Area.  Members from the Ottawa Flyfishers Society will also be present to teach youth about the fundamentals of fly-fishing, and the techniques needed to use a fly-fishing rod.

Registration for the catch-and-release fish camp will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Each participant will receive a free fishing rod and lunch will be provided on both days.  Youth taking part must bring their own life-jacket. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“There are no prerequisites or registration fees required to participate in the camp,” Nyenkamp said. “But youth need to show their respect and enthusiasm for nature.”

One of SNC’s primary responsibilities is to provide youth with hands-on tools allowing them to fish responsibly. The process is repeated in the fall with young hunters.

“We hope to foster a lifelong appreciation of the local environment that can be passed down for generations. As environmentalists, we advocate for responsible and sustainable fishing and hunting.”
