Theft from vehicle highlights OPP ‘Lock It OR Lose It’ campaign

SOUTH STORMONT — The theft of several electronic items from inside a vehicle in South Stormont has the SD&G OPP reminding residents of the detachment’s ‘Lock it OR Lose It’ campaign.

In this case, the victim’s vehicle was entered sometime overnight, July 14-15, while parked at a residence on Lakeside Drive.

As part of the Lock It OR Lose It program, officers examine parked vehicles to confirm they are locked and that no valuables have been left in plain view. A notice is placed on every vehicle specifying what safety precautions were ignored and simple prevention tips to protect vehicles and valuables from theft.

Police advise vehicle owners they can help prevent theft by:

• Always rolling up a vehicle’s windows, locking the doors and pocketing the key;

• Using a garage, if available, and locking the door as well as the vehicle;

• Keeping a vehicle’s registration certificate/proof of insurance on you at all times;

• Always parking a vehicle in a well-lit area;

• Never leaving valuable objects or packages in full view and placing them in the trunk instead;

• Never leaving a vehicle unattended while running.
