Motorists urged to stay away from area because of traffic tie-ups through Long Sault
SOUTH STORMONT — SD&G OPP officers are on the scene of a second fatal crash occurring on the eastbound Highway 401 in South Stormont, a few kilometres from where another driver was killed less than 12 hours earlier. It’s also the second fatality involving a tractor trailer.
The latest collision happened around 12:30 p.m., at mile marker 769, when an eastbound passenger vehicle struck an eastbound tractor trailer, according to police.
The male driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene, while the male driver of tractor trailer was not injured.
Names are being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.
SD&G OPP, assisted by OPP Traffic Collision Investigators (TCI) continue to process the scene.
Previously closed between Brookdale Avenue (Cornwall) and Ingleside’s Dickinson Drive in the wake of last night’s crash, the closure of the 401’s eastbound lanes has since been extended to Upper Canada Road as a result of the latest accident.
Police urge the travelling public to avoid the area if possible. Due to damage to Highway 401 from the previous collision in the area, the closure will remain in place for an extended period of time. Meanwhile, construction on a portion of County Rd. 2, in the village of Long Sault, means added delay for detoured motorists.
