Upper Canada Village to host 1860s fall fair Sept. 16 to 17

MORRISBURG — Upper Canada Village wraps up the summer season on September 16 and 17 with the 1860s Fall Fair, Quilt Show and Upper Canadian Beard Championship.  The fair is an opportunity for the Village to display its harvest bounty and invite visitors to also showcase their own fine art, preserves, handwork, vegetables and other items using 1860s fair categories and rules as a guideline.  Full details are on the website www.uppercanadavillage.com .

Music and magic shows throughout the day will entertain audiences in the fairgrounds.  See livestock, agricultural and dairy products, vegetables, flowers, and fine arts on display.  Families can join in old-fashioned fun and games.

Quilting guilds from across Eastern Ontario will gather to exhibit an array of contemporary works.  The quilts will be on view at the Family Activity Centre on both Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Upper Canada Village will display antique quilts and historical reproductions from the Village’s own collection. Participating guilds will include Cornwall Guild, Highland Quilters Guild, Limestone Guild, Thousand Islands Guild and one independent group Vick’s Chicks.

Always an audience favourite, the Upper Canadian Beard Championship will take place on Sunday, September 17 at 1:15 p.m. at Cook’s Tavern. The competition is all in fun and is based on creativity, infused with a historical spirit and a healthy sense of humour.  Upper Canada Village’s time period, the mid-19th century, was a grand moment for male facial hair.  Contestants can enter one or more of seven different categories from moustaches to full beards to show off their facial hair.  Contestants must register at Cook’s Tavern no later than 1:00 p.m.  Forms are also available online.

It wouldn’t be a fair without some tasty Village Fair treats. Fresh apples, Village-baked bread, Village made cheese, cider, lemonade and fudge will all be available for just 50 cents per serving.
