It All Began with a $5 Gold Coin

WINCHESTER — In 1913, at a meeting of the Florence Nightingale Chapter in Brockville, a $5 gold coin was donated to start a fund for an Eastern Star Home. Many more donations and acts of kindness and caring followed. Today, the Florence Nightingale Home Foundation continues this generous work, providing funds for specific pieces of patient care equipment for hospitals throughout Ontario. Winchester District Memorial Hospital (WDMH) is pleased to be one of the beneficiaries.

At a ceremony held on October 24, more than two dozen members came to WDMH to present a cheque for $4,000 to the WDMH Foundation.

“We are so grateful to the Florence Nightingale Home Foundation and the Order of the Eastern Star, Winchester Chapter. Some of the members travelled quite a distance to be with us and we really appreciate it,” noted Kristen Casselman, Foundation Managing Director. “Thank you so much for your generosity and for all that you do to support health care across the province.”

“This is the fourth presentation to your hospital,” added Margaret Lynn, Secretary-Treasurer. “The first was a blood cell washer in 1985. In 1995, an infusion pump was presented. And in 2005, an infant weigh scale and portable pulse oximeter were purchased.” Their most recent donation, in support of the WDMH Foundation’s General Equipment Fund, was used toward the purchase of a new ultrasound stretcher.

At the ceremony, WDMH technologist Sheila Jordan demonstrated how the new stretcher works, explaining the many benefits for patients and staff. “It is exceeding all of our expectations and we are so appreciative,” Sheila noted.

“Just like your organization, people are the lifeblood of WDMH,” summed up Cholly Boland, CEO. “We want the best people to have the best equipment. This is the fourth time you’ve supported WDMH and we thank you.”
