401 remains closed in both directions near Prescott

Update: Police say 401 westbound has been reopened to traffic. Eastbound still remains closed.

PRESCOTT — The 401 remains closed both directions near Prescott after two fatal collisions involving tractor trailers.

Police arrived at the second crash scene around 10:30 p.m. last night.

Preliminary investigation has indicated that two transport trailers and three vehicles were travelling eastbound on Highway 401 when the collision occurred.

Two individuals were pronounced deceased at the scene. Three individuals have been transported to hospital by ambulance and one individual by air ambulance with serious and life threatening injuries.

The identity of the deceased is being held pending notification of next of kin.

A 60-year-old male from Brossard, Que., was arrested for dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm.

Highway 401 eastbound is closed until further notice.

Highway 401 westbound remains closed from an earlier collision yesterday afternoon shortly before 4 p.m. involving two other transport trailers.

The OPP Technical Collision Investigations Unit is assisting the local detachment.
