CHESTERVILLE — The WEB Leaders of North Dundas District High School (NDDHS) presented Chesterville native and former student Patricia Cumming with a cheque for $510 last Friday.

The Where Everyone Belongs Leaders began fundraising for Cumming when their instructors brought her struggles to their attention.

The students decided to host a Halloween dance to raise money for the former student.

Attendees were asked to donate what they could and collectively raised $510.

Cumming suffers from an incurable disorder called Neurofibromatosis that she was born with. She also has an uncontrolled form of epilepsy and is restricted to a wheelchair.

The students hoped to raise to help pay for a much needed powered wheelchair and chairlift for the family van.

Sandra Cumming, Patricia’s mother, told Nation Valley News that thanks to the amazing work of the students and other community-led fundraisers, she was able to place the order for the $18,000 lift (manual short conversion) on Monday.

Patricia thoroughly enjoyed her first visit back to NDDHS in over 13 years. She was surprised at all the changes that have been made structurally.

She was especially impressed by the accessibility measures that have been put into place, mentioning the automatic door-opening buttons that were installed beside the office doors.

Patricia said she ‘needed a helper to open most doors when I went here.”

Patricia and her mother couldn’t thank the students and the teachers enough for all of their hard work. Patricia has a long road ahead but thanks to the many generous donations of the students, parents, teachers, and community members, her life will be a little easier now.
