Buses cancelled today, Jan. 23

EASTERN ONTARIO —  The region’s school buses are out of commission this morning and so is the website of system overseer, Student Transportation of Eastern Ontario.

The cancellation was anticipated — so much so that STEO even pulled the buses yesterday in advance of the weather system that finally doused the area with freezing rain overnight and into this morning. STEO’s Twitter channel confirmed today’s cancellation and also the fact that its website — steo.ca — is offline.

Expected to continue for a while yet today, the freezing rain has left roads treacherous and turned any unsalted sidewalks and driveways into skating rinks.

It’s the seventh day of cancelled transportation this school year.

One Chesterville grandparent says his grandchildren have been to school in Kemptville only three days since the end of the Christmas holidays — between bus cancellation and professional development days.

Before the expected ice rain, the blustery weather system arrives with snow and ice pellets, as seen on Nation Valley Road this evening.
