WINCHESTER — Each year on March 8 women all over the world come together to celebrate International Women’s Day. International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities

The first International Women’s Day was observed on March 19, 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. That day, more than one million women and men showed their support by participating in public events. Between 1913 and 1917, women in Russia and elsewhere in Europe began to celebrate the day as well.

Over time, International Women’s Day has grown to become a global day of recognition and celebration. The theme was expanded by the United Nations in 1975 with the International Women’s Year. By 1977, the United Nations had adopted a resolution designating March 8 as International Women’s Day. Today, International Women’s Day is a national holiday in many countries and celebrated in many more.

Canadians celebrate the progress towards equality for women, reflect on the challenges and barriers that remain and consider future steps to achieving equality for all women, in all aspects of their lives.

We encourage all Canadians — women and men, girls and boys — to promote International Women’s Day.

This year, Canada’s theme for International Women’s Day is #MyFeminism, inspired by the role feminism continues to play in shaping Canada and countries around the world. From the early suffragettes to the activists of today, #MyFeminism celebrates the feminists who inspire others through their determination to make a difference. They are the activists, advocates, and allies who continue to lead the way towards positive change.

This year Naomi’s Family Resource Centre will be celebrating by hosting their annual Community Luncheon on Thursday, March 8, 2018 from 11:45 am to 1:00 pm at St. Clare’s Anglican Church 2530 Falcone Lane, Winchester, ON. Doors will open at 11:00 am and we are asking our guests to come wearing purple to be entered into a special draw.
