Several thousand without power in rural SDG after storm sweeps through

CHESTERVILLE — Several thousand people remain without power in rural Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry after a fierce thunderstorm went through the area around 2 p.m.

Hydro One’s online outage map shows more than 5,700 without electricity in much of Russell Township and down into Crysler and the St. Albert area, 984 in North Glengarry, 364 in the countryside south of Chesterville, and short of 200 in South Glengarry.

Restoration of power is estimated between 4:15 and 5 p.m. at the various sites.

A tornado warning lit up local cell phones several minutes in advance of the the storm’s arrival.

Environment Canada has ended a severe thunderstorm watch for the area.
