Wrong-way driver dies on 401 this morning, westbound lanes remain closed near Morrisburg overpass

MORRISBURG — SD&G OPP are still at the scene of a very messy crash on Highway 401 westbound between Upper Canada Road overpass and the Highway 31 overpass after a man was killed while driving the wrong direction.

A preliminary investigation has indicated that shortly after 9:30 a.m. a tractor trailer was travelling westbound on Highway 401 when, for reasons under investigation, a passenger vehicle entered the Highway 401 travelling eastbound in the westbound lanes and collided with the westbound tractor trailer.

The male driver (lone occupant) of the eastbound passenger vehicle was pronounced deceased at scene.

Names are being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.

The driver of the tractor trailer was uninjured.

SD&G OPP continue to process the scene and investigate the collision with the assistance of the OPP Traffic Collision Investigators (TCI).

As the investigation continues, a section of the westbound lanes of Highway 401 between Upper Canada Road and County Road 31, Morrisburg is closed to traffic with indicated detours in place.
