Nova Scotia man charged with first degree murder in death of Emilie Maheu

SOUTH GLENGARRY — Police have charged a Nova Scotia man with first degree murder in the death of a South Glengarry woman.

The SD&G OPP say Brandon Smeltzer, 25, was located yesterday, Oct. 16, in New Brunswick and charged with killing Emilie Maheu, 26. The deceased had gone missing on Oct. 11 after leaving her Alexandria workplace around 1 p.m.; Maheu’s body was discovered two days later in a farmer’s field just outside the village, according to media reports.

Smeltzer is from Bayside, Nova Scotia. He’s set to be transported back to Ontario for an appearance in Cornwall court.

The investigation is being conducted by members of SD&G Crime Unit, supported by Forensic Identification Services (FIS), and the East Region Regional Support Team (RST), under the direction of Detective Inspector Rob Hagerman of the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB).
