The ‘first’ November 11th

MORRISBURG — Memorializing the men who died defending their home soil during “the first November 11th” — on November 11, 1813 — the Battle of Crysler’s Farm monument here attracted a commemorative gathering on Remembrance Day 2018.

An annual tradition for the last decade or so, the Nov. 11 gathering at the soaring hilltop monument typically attracts local history buffs, War of 1812 re-enactors and current military personnel. This year was no exception. But in a special treat for those in attendance, the monument cannons were fired off for the first time since 1961 — when the memorial officially reopened after being relocated as part of the Seaway project and construction of nearby Upper Canada Village.
