Day 4: Freezing rain and snow combine to nix buses again

EASTERN ONTARIO — Student Transportation of Eastern Ontario pulled the buses for a fourth consecutive day this week.

Possibly not since the Ice Storm of ’98 have school buses been kept off the roads for such a stretch of days.

In today’s explanation for the cancellation, STEO notes “treacherous road conditions across much of the region resulting from extended periods of freezing rain, followed by rain, with dropping temperatures to come.”

STEO handles all school transportation — hiring school bus companies and deciding when and where buses should run —  on behalf of the Upper Canada District School Board and the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario. The McGuinty government created bus authority “consortia” like STEO almost a decade ago to reduce duplication of school transportation services.

Exams

While exams were supposed to start today at local high schools, they’ve been rescheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 30th, “unless your son’s/daughter’s school communicates a different plan directly to you, your child, or via social media. Please watch for updates on your school’s Facebook site,” says the Upper Canada District School Board.
