PRESCOTT — A New York state man has been charged with careless driving in the fatal bus crash that took the lives of three people on Highway 401 last June.

Grenville County OPP revealed today that Jia Qi, 31, of Flushing, NY, was charged with the Highway Traffic Act offence back on Nov. 26. Police say Qi was driving the westbound bus carrying numerous tourists from China that struck a rock-cut along the highway between Prescott and Maitland on June 4, 2018.

Three passengers died and 34 were injured as a result of the wreck.

The authorities did not inform the public of the charges against the driver until now because of the delay related to the process of notifying all of the involved passengers in China, according to the Grenville County OPP.

Qi is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brockville on Feb. 8.
