Annual event begins Friday, Feb. 8
CHESTERVILLE — The weather’s cold, there’s ice and snow in abundance, and it can only mean one thing: This community’s volunteer organizers have diligently put together another annual Chesterville Winter Carnival schedule.
Centred on the Chesterville Legion Hall and Chesterville Arena — along with some special activities at the Nelson LaPrade Centre and The Gathering House — the 2019 festivities kick off 5 p.m. this Friday evening, Feb. 8. The Chesterville Agricultural Society serves a chili and bun supper, the puck drops on the ever-popular 3-on-3 youth hockey tournament, and the teen dance all get underway that night. (Still not registered for the tourney? Text text 613-978-1580 to inquire; cost is $10 per player).
The firefighter’s breakfast (Saturday morning), Chesterville Public School spaghetti supper (Saturday evening) and Christ Church United’s ham supper (Sunday evening) are also on the menu of hearty meals this weekend.
In a new development, the LaPrade Centre will also hostssome Carnival activities, starting with a wooden sign workshop on Friday and youth cooking classes on Saturday.
Beyond the teenaged set, Chestervillians of all ages will enjoy no shortage of opportunities to kick up their heels this weekend. Saturday night’s age-of majority dance will loosen up the audience with a hypnotist pre-show. Back by popular tradition on Sunday is the Kids’ and Friends Dance with a slew of favourite costumed characters in the Legion that afternoon.
Another highlight is Saturday’s crowning of the Snowflake Prince and Princess.
Expect to see a silent auction featuring donated items — a Carnival fixture for many years — and don’t forget to pick up a Carnival button at the Legion, Chesterville Pharmacy or Flair with Fabrics. Each button comes with a chance to win the draw slated to occur during the Feb. 10 supper.
