EASTERN ONTARIO — Anticipating a forecasted heavy dump of snow later this afternoon, Student Transportation of Eastern Ontario has called off the school buses for today, Feb. 12.
The pre-emptory move comes as the region braces for significant snowfall that is supposed to start around mid day. Strong winds are also expected. All field trips and activities are also cancelled, according to STEO.
Schools remain open for students who can get there.
Handling bus transportation for the Upper Canada District and Catholic District of Eastern Ontario school boards, STEO actually recognizes 17 internal zones within its service area that is larger than Prince Edward Island. However, bus cancellations are always made on a region-wide basis instead of zone-by-zone. Replying to a recent question on social media about this practice, STEO explained the latter idea would be “extremely challenging to implement and communicate and is not without significant risk…” (see post below):
