SOUTH MOUNTAIN — Francine Duncan continues to share a knack for decorating weddings with a burgeoning inventory inside an expanded base of operations already laden with the nuptial accoutrements worthy of the best spread on Pinterest.
Relocated into her new digs last year, the sprawling facility at the corner of County Roads 3 and 16 is just a stone’s throw from the spot where she married husband Ed on the banks of the South Nation River. That event helped stoked Duncan’s interest in a wedding-related career, so much did she enjoy decorating her own.
Having moved out of the nooks and crannies of her significant other’s trucking business across the street, Joy to Share Decorating & Rental stocks all sorts of items to transform a happy couple’s chosen venue — indoor or outdoor — into the romantic theme of their choosing. The betrothed may choose a package rental theme or simply rent individual items, streamers, chairs, antique door backdrops, garlands, arches, artificial flowers, centerpieces, candlesticks, rustic bric-a-brac like old apple bushel boxes and so much more. And even if Duncan doesn’t have a particular object on the premises, Duncan — a bilingual native of Navan — can always source it.
“If I can physically move it, I’ll get it,” she explained, amid a crowd of visitors on hand for last fall’s official ribbon-cutting at the new store. The ground-level concrete pad also means it’s “easier than ever to move stuff in here,” she pointed out. “Basically I move it onto my cart and roll it to my little trailer, and I’m good.”
There are one or two exceptions to that rule, including a couple of classic French provincial-style couches Duncan also offers out for rent.
The new storage environment is a far cry from the six transport trailers that previously housed Duncan’s growing collection of goods on the neighbouring JED Express property. Although she had relocated everything into her new headquarters last June, it was still a relief to formally and finally celebrate the transition into her own space on Oct. 17, 2018, after a busy summer and wedding season.
Ed was also happy to get back his trailers, she quipped, “and all his drivers are delighted that they’ve got parking back.”
The businesswoman has been aggressively filling a local need since she bought the existing enterprise in January 2016 from the originators and previous longtime operators, Joyce Boyd and Shari Martin of South Mountain. Along the way, Duncan has been adding to her supply of items, buying up collections and pieces when the opportunity presents itself.
“She’s grown the business by leaps and bounds,” admired Boyd with a tone of pride, after recounting how she and Martin started the enterprise in a garden shed 27 years earlier.
“We never imagined going beyond word of mouth,” added Martin. “We were reluctant to build a website. It took a younger person to take it in that direction.”
Today’s version of Joy to Share Decorating & Rental also rents out an outdoor bar and similarly offers a glass-fronted refrigerated trailer to chill the beverages for that perfect country wedding on a summer’s day.
