Warrior Bantam Girls bring home gold from broomball championships

EASTERN ONTARIO — The Warriors bantam girl’s broomball team are the new 2019 Ontario Champions after competing in the provincial championship tournament held in Barrie, On February 8-10. The girls received their gold medals after defeating the Mildmay Mustangs in the finals.

In the tournament opener the girls came out hard resulting in a 4-0 win against the Blyth Bullets. Grace Henry led the way scoring on a nice set up by Aneliesa Reid and Isabelle Ouelette. The power house line went onto net two more goals. The fourth and final goal of the game, scored on a power play was a beautiful tip in front of the net by Melanie Fogarty off a blistering shot by Emma MacLean with only five seconds left on the clock.

The second game was an intense standoff against the Mustangs. Coralie Dagenais scored with 8:21 remaining in the game however the Mustangs were able to even the score less than two minutes later sending the game into sudden death overtime. Both teams ran into penalties, but it only took one minute of the extra time for the Warriors to advance to the finals. Henry scored on another outstanding set up by Ouelette and Reid.

Sunday morning brought a rematch between the Warriors and the Mustangs for the title. Both teams fought hard and with only 1:37 left in the game Alexane Paquette drove home the golden goal on a perfect passing play from Henry and Dagenais. The Warriors goaltender Aurora Giroux was outstanding in the final minute as she was through the tournament to secure the championship.  

The Warriors played incredibly strong as a team and worked hard every shift they were on the ice. The team’s drive was unmatched by any other. The team is derived from players all over Eastern Ontario.
