WINCHESTER — Our latest Commitment Award winners have one thing in common, and it has to do with the heart. Whether caring for cardiac patients, showing heartfelt support to our patients and families, or being heart and soul of the WDMH team – the latest Commitment Award recipients definitely have heart!
Congratulations to Cardiologist Dr. Kamal Sharma; Volunteer Marilyn McCurdy and the WDMH Recreation Committee which includes Catherine O’Neill, Chelsea McIntyre, Chris Barkley, Cindy Peters, David Scharf, Debbie DeCooman, Jennifer Nelson, Joyce Smith, Kirsti Weekes, Kristen Casselman, Maryse O’Shaughnessy, Michelle Blouin, and Shelley Summers.
As part of WDMH’s cardiac care team, Dr. Kamal Sharma is approachable, compassionate and truly cares about his patients and the staff that he works with. “He is an excellent combination of both cardiology and internal medicine and goes above and beyond, treating each patient as a whole and not just focusing on their cardiac issues,” say his nominators. In addition, he is an excellent teacher for both staff and students. “We are truly lucky to have a physician that is capable of practicing in a specialized institution like The Ottawa Heart Institute and is still willing to come and dedicate himself to our small rural hospital, allowing our patients to receive the care they truly need close to home.”
Volunteer Marilyn McCurdy saw a need and stepped up. One day, while in Emergency with her husband, she noticed there was no volunteer at the front desk. So, she grabbed an Auxiliary vest and spent several hours helping out. “Marilyn demonstrated the exact reason why WDMH has earned a reputation for trying to go the extra distance,” explain her nominators. She truly has a heart of gold.
Working at a hospital is serious business, and the WDMH team must work together to care for our patients. That’s where the Recreation Committee comes in. They help foster a ‘one team’ philosophy at WDMH. This creative group plans events and celebrations that promote excellence in the workplace – and we get to have some fun along the way. From paint nights to family outings to fundraising activities, there is always something going to promote team spirit. “They make us all conscious of how fortunate we are to work at WDMH. We are also fortunate to have so many engaged employee and volunteers on the WDMH Recreation Committee,” sum up their nominators.
The Commitment Awards shine a light on individuals or teams that demonstrate the values that result in compassionate excellence. Congratulations to all the nominees.
