Annual ‘freshet’ underway in the South Nation watershed

NATION VALLEY — The big melt is well underway, and a swollen South Nation is running fast as the winter’s snow and ice liquifies with milder temperatures in the watershed.

This year’s ‘freshet’ has been occurring gradually, and local watershed authorities are issuing the standard advice to residents to exercise caution around waterbodies and slippery riverbanks — and to explain these risks to their children.

It’s also a good time to ensure that sump pumps are in working order.

The clip below shows the South Nation River exiting the Chesterville Dam this morning, March 30.
