CHESTERVILLE — Therien Martial Arts and Fitness Centre in Chesterville welcomed Wally Slocki to their gym Sept. 24, where the legendary martial arts Grand Master put students of all ages through their paces.
“It’s as if you had someone like Wayne Gretzky here,” remarked Hanshi John Therien, founder of Therien Martial Arts, of the visiting superstar.
In his 52nd year as a martial artist, Slocki, 72, is on the fight card for an upcoming charity bout to benefit the Make a Wish Foundation. The Nov. 1 Iceman Productions / Capital Conquest event will pit the Etobicoke resident and former Canadian Karate Champion against Bill “Superfoot” Wallace at the Palais des Congrès de Gatineau.
Norm Beauchamp, owner of the Chesterville Centre, said it was inspiring to see one of his heroes running a seminar at the establishment that evening.
Endorsing the operation, Slocki said it was great to be at a place “that brings people together” of all ages. After some good-natured sparring, he especially encouraged the youngsters on scene to “always help each other.”
