BROCKVILLE — Trustees with the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) met on Wednesday, Oct. 9, for their regular Board meeting. They discussed several agenda items.
Parent Involvement Committee Report
Trustee Jamie Schoular presented the annual report of the UCDSB Parent Involvement Committee.
Schoular reviewed the committee’s successes in 2018-19: the committee hosted a consultation session on Special Education and provided feedback to the Board on the Safe Schools Policy; members also hosted a community information session on the potential impact of decriminalization of marijuana on our school; and advocated for a provincial commitment to reinstate Parents Reaching Out grants. In succession planning, the committee recruited two new executive members.
In the current year, the committee will explore hosting on-line meetings using available technology to make it easier for parents to attend and participate.
UCDSB to Participate in New Substance Abuse Prevention Program
The Board will partner with Planet Youth Lanark County to introduce the Icelandic Model for Prevention of Problematic Substance Use in Lanark County and Smiths Falls. Trustees approved entering into a memorandum of understanding with Planet Youth Lanark County. The partnership will allow Planet Youth to survey UCDSB Grade 10 students regarding risk and protective factors influencing substance use by youth. The agreement will also provide opportunities to collaborate on community-led initiatives to prevent substance use among youth residing in other communities that are served by the Board.
Planet Youth Lanark County will cover any costs for surveys, data analysis, distributing community specific reports, and support for communities developing action plans. Trustees approved the agreement after representatives of Planet Youth and the Leeds, Grenville, and Lanark District Health Unit spoke to the board on September 25 about the “Icelandic” model and its benefits. The program has yielded impressive reductions in substance abuse among Icelandic youth over the last two decades. Trustees also requested a report on the program at a future date to allow them to evaluate the impact of the partnership.
Interim Treasurer Appointed
Trustees appointed UCDSB Comptroller of Finance Diana Kingston as Interim Treasurer for the Board. Ms. Kingston has been appointed following the passing of Superintendent of Business/Chief Financial Officer Bob Backstrom. Ms. Kingston, who is a Certified Public Accountant, will serve in the role until February 1, 2020, until a new Superintendent of Business/Chief Financial Officer is appointed by the Board.
