CHESTERVILLE — Denis Ducharme has been known to occasionally suit up as Old Saint Nick for Christmas dinners at the Nationview Seniors’ apartments where he lives with his wife, Barbara.
But on Nov. 20, the grandfather of 15 (and great-grandfather of another 15 progeny) received an unexpected gift worthy of Santa’s best: His Encore ticket matched six of seven numbers, sending the OLG machine into a musical tizzy when scanned at Mike Dean’s.
Ducharme picked up his $100,000 win Nov. 26 in Toronto.
“Just before Christmas like that, the bills are all paid, the kids are going to have a good Christmas,” he laughed on the telephone, when telling NVN of the pleasant surprise.
Ducharme’s windfall dwarfs a previous $1,600 jackpot he previously won playing the lottery over the last 40 years.
While wins of up to $249,999 can be collected through the nearest OLG casino — Rideau Carleton in this case — the payout can take weeks to process. The Chesterville resident opted to travel to the provincial capital to avoid that wait.
