SOUTH DUNDAS — A new full-time family physician is set to join the St. Lawrence Medical Clinic’s South Dundas practice.

Dr. Carlos E. Cunha has signed an agreement with the municipality that will bring him into the local medical group’s Morrisburg operation in July 2020 — upshot of a “combined effort” to woo the doctor to the area.

Dr. Cunha is currently applying for his certification to practice in Ontario, and once received, will relocate to South Dundas. The incoming doctor completed his medical residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center – Family Medicine and his undergraduate degree in Ottawa.

“I’m thrilled to be joining the team at the St. Lawrence Medical Clinic in Morrisburg. It is a place that is close to me and my wife; since her family is from the area and it is also a region we grew to love during our undergraduate years in Ottawa,” Dr. Cunha said in a press release from the municipality. “We are also sure it will be a great place to raise our two-year-old son, Samuel. It’s a wonderful professional opportunity, and I am looking forward to being a productive member of the community.”

South Dundas residents have not been immune to a regional shortage of doctors that has effectively created an underclass of people with less access to the healthcare system.

The municipality says it has been actively working to bring more physicians and health care professionals to the area and that council and staff have recognized the issue as a priority.

With the help of Dr. Rivington, these efforts are beginning to pay off. “The St. Lawrence Medical Clinic is delighted that Dr. Cunha will be joining our group in July 2020. He comes highly recommended by his colleagues and supervisors and has a special interest in Rural Medicine. Dr. Cunha and his wife have ties to our area and are looking forward to living and working here,” said Dr. Rivington. “The St. Lawrence Medical Clinic is very appreciative of the efforts of the South Dundas Council in assisting in the recruitment process which has enabled Dr. Cunha to join us.”

“We are very excited to be able to announce a new medical practitioner joining us in South Dundas. Dr. Cunha will be a welcome addition to the St. Lawrence Medical Clinic and the health care services in our community. His practice will help provide more local access to medical services for our residents and will help grow South Dundas as an ideal place to live,” said Mayor Steven Byvelds. “Thank you to the continued efforts from our council, staff and the St. Lawrence Medical Clinic.”
