Ceremonial first tapping of the 2020 maple syrup season

NORTH STORMONT — Sand Road Maple Farm in Moose Creek observed the annual Eastern Ontario Maple Syrup Producers’ Association’s ceremonial first tapping of the sugaring season today, marking the production start of Ontario Maple Syrup in this end of the province.

Brian Barkley of Barkleyvale Farms delivered an indigenous-inspired prayer at the event, while Frank Heerkens of On The Bend Sugar Shack — also president of the Eastern Ontario producer group and vice president of the Ontario Maple Syrup Producers Association — served as emcee. Local MP Eric Duncan assisted a couple of children and Sand Road sugarbush co-owner Scott Coleman on the first spile.

South Nation Conservation CAO Angela Coleman (co-owner of the Sand Road operation), board member Doug Thompson, Tagwi teacher Craig Stevenson — along with a helper from Vancouver — put up a second bucket. Those in attendance also get an update about the upcoming Ontario Maple Weekend 2020 in April.
