CORNWALL — After seeing a need to support businesses in the midst of a pandemic, the website was launched to help local small businesses connect with their customers while dealing with COVID-19 and physical distancing challenges. Customers can visit the website and choose a gift certificate from up to 160 local small businesses. Customers are able to use the downloadable and printable gift certificates when businesses reopen in the future.

Given the urgency of the issue, local creative technologist Kelly Bergeron, knew that businesses needed to pivot to online as quickly as possible with the easiest possible delivery system. Her Shopify skills came into play and she was able to launch with approximately 70 or so businesses in under 6 hours. She was quickly overwhelmed with emails from many other businesses, reaching out to partake in the program or to find out how to launch something similar.

Chris Munro, local business leader and owner of Life’s Little Pleasures had this to say about the program: I think I can speak for everyone … I am beyond grateful for the genuine concern, the supportive ear, the ongoing communications, the help and the selfless heart that Kelly has for our small business community. And a big thank you to our customers for bringing us hope and support during these challenging times.”

Upon the launch of the website, the CEO of Shopify took notice:

Many other global tech entrepreneurs and BIAs reached out from as far as Switzerland, the Philippines, Jamaica, the Netherlands, the Province of Quebec, Victoria (BC), Kanata North BA, and many others cities.

Kelly and Mayor Bernadette Clement will be appearing on the Shopify Masters Podcast this Tuesday, to talk about the importance of supporting local businesses and opportunities for governments and entrepreneurs to work together, to solve big civic challenges.
