RUSSELL — What started out as a simple backyard project turned into a great fundraiser for Embrun Food Bank.

Local Russell resident Doug Anthony needed help moving 10 yards of topsoil to a spot beneath a large deck — a very difficult area to get to — and called upon some local youth.

Keiran, Brennan and Reilly Marchessault and Owen Johnson carried out the task while practicing self distancing — with the Marchessaults (from the same household) working together and Owen Johnson labouring on his own.

For over four hours the young men toiled shovelling, lugging, dumping and spreading topsoil until the job was fully completed. However, all four youths refused the cash offered for their work and instead asked Anthony to forward the proceeds to the Food Bank to help out during the COVID-19 crisis.

Anthony agreed and matched their pay for a $500 donation to the local institution.

“It is heartwarming and inspiring to see such generous and considerate young men like these four,” says Anthony. “Their future looks bright.”
