22-year-old charged after dangling machete out of a car window

OTTAWA – Ottawa Police received reports of a man who was seen driving a vehicle down a residential street while dangling a machete out of a window yesterday, in Ottawa’s east end. The vehicle was seen speeding up and slowing down in the area, shortly before 5:30 p.m., in the area of Fullerton Avenue and Lola Street.

Responding officers patrolled the area, but the vehicle had left. One officer remained in the area awaiting the return of the vehicle.

When the vehicle returned, the officer arrested the driver. A machete, pepper spray and a balaclava were seized.

Jaafar Al-Mahdawi, 22, of Ottawa is charged with:

  •       Possession of a weapon
  •       Possession of weapons dangerous
  •       Two counts of Failure to Comply with an Undertaking
  •       Careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
  •       Failure to Stop at a Stop Sign (HTA)

He was released on an Undertaking.
