EASTERN ONTARIO — This region’s incoming mandatory mask-wearing rule is set to be explained in detail during a 2:30 p.m. media conference today with the four medical officers of health whose territories extend from the outskirts of Kingston all the way to the Quebec border.
Dr. Paul Roumeliotis of the Eastern Ontario Health Unit, Dr. Paula Stewart of the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit, Dr. Robert Cushman of the Renfrew County and District Health Unit and Dr. Vera Etches of Ottawa Public Health are all slated to take part in the Zoom session. NVN will stream the conference live.
The doctors have been working together to legally impose the wearing of masks in indoor public places and stores, across their jurisdictions. Those failing to comply could be subject to fines, although Dr. Roumeliotis has said he wants to take an educational approach at first.
Roumeliotis last week revealed the upcoming regional rule and his intention to make it happen in his own area by issuing orders under section 22 of the Health Protection and Promotion Act.
Update: Roumeliotis and the other doctors will issue directives under another piece of provincial legislation — the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act — to bring the rule into effect.
