Enbridge Gas helps support North Dundas firefighter training

NORTH DUNDAS — Canada’s largest natural gas distributor is helping to fuel the purchase of firefighting training materials by the North Dundas Fire Service. The dollars are flowing through Enbridge Gas Inc.’s Project Assist — a program that supplements existing training for Ontario volunteer and composite fire departments in the communities where the company operates.

Twenty Ontario fire departments are each collecting a share of the $100,000 donation, including North Dundas. Funds will be used to purchase educational materials for firefighters to enhance life-saving techniques.

“At Enbridge Gas, safety is our priority. We’re proud to support Ontario firefighters who share our commitment to keeping our communities safe,” says Luke Skaarup, Director, Northern Region Operations, Enbridge Gas.

Since the launch of Project Assist in 2012, 194 grants have been provided to Ontario fire departments for additional firefighter training.

“Project Assist improves access to training materials for fire departments,” says Jon Pegg, Ontario Fire Marshal. “Firefighting can be dangerous and unpredictable, and these training materials positively contribute to the health and safety of firefighters and the
broader community.”

North Dundas Chief Mike Gruich, Fire Department Liaison,  described the grant as a “great asset to our training and fire prevention libraries,” adding, “We are lucky to have been selected, as these materials will benefit both our staff and community as a whole.”

The North Dundas Fire Service consists of four fire stations staffed entirely by volunteer firefighters within the township. The team responds to not only fires, but medical emergencies, vehicular collisions, gas leaks and more. All firefighters are on-call 24/7, attend regular training sessions, and make an effort to be a positive community presence. In addition to their regular duties, they provide outreach through local programs and events, public service announcements in the media, and offer fire prevention training programs at local elementary and secondary schools.

Enbridge Gas Inc. was created from the merger of Union Gas Limited and Enbridge Gas Distribution on Jan. 1, 2019.
