EMBRUN — Long-time resident Janet Cooper of Embrun complained that her husband, Jim, woke her up at 10:45 p.m. Saturday night to buy a Catch the Ace ticket. Well, she complained until Sunday afternoon when her name was drawn as the weekly winner of the Kin Club of Russell’s Catch the Ace lottery.
Janet won the weekly draw, earning herself $5,079 but missed the $100,000 jackpot when her envelope # 44 revealed the four of diamonds. She had told her husband Jim, “Why bother, I’m not going to win,” but purchased tickets anyway. Jim had suggested she buy online before the midnight deadline for tickets passed.
To date, the Kin Club of Russell’s third lottery has raised almost $150,000 for local charities. There are 21 envelopes left and the draws are every Sunday afternoon until the ace of spades is revealed, at 3:15 p.m. at Etienne Brule Brewery in Embrun.
Tickets can be purchased online at www.kinclubofrussell.ca until 11:59 p.m. Saturday night, or around noon (paper tickets) on Sunday at many of the retail locations.
As for Jim … Janet promised to split her earnings with him — $5,000 to $79.
