SOUTH STORMONT — Though the annual Township of South Stormont Volunteer Appreciation Gala has been postponed due to the pandemic, the Volunteer Appreciation Committee went ahead in recognizing the efforts of a young volunteer in the community.

Their chosen nominee was Alexa Zummach, who was presented with South Stormont’s very first Youth Volunteer of the Year Award on December 14th. The committee chose Zummach for her efforts in helping out the local 4H Club and the Stormont County Fair Board. She also continues to volunteer for community events such as the Ingleside Firefighters Challenge/Block Party, Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life, Stephanie Grady Memorial Run, and the Avonmore Ladies Night.

“We’re so fortunate to have some incredible young people in our community,” says Mayor Bryan McGillis. “The Youth Volunteer of the Year Award is an opportunity to recognize their efforts to improve our community, and Ms. Zummach was the perfect selection as the award’s first recipient.”

Zummach plans to attend Loyalist College in 2021 and hopes to one day enjoy a career in border services or criminal investigation.
